This means I do not bill insurance directly. Instead, I provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
Why Work With an Out‑of‑Network Therapist?
Choosing an out‑of‑network provider offers meaningful advantages, especially if you value:
Greater privacy — no diagnostic or treatment details shared with insurance, unless you choose
Faith‑integrated therapy without restrictions on language or approach
Specialized expertise in chronic pain psychology, anxiety, depression, and Christian mindfulness
A calm, unhurried therapeutic space
More presence and flexibility in session structure
The out-of-network model supports a therapeutic experience that is attentive, spacious, and clinically grounded.
Understanding Out‑of‑Network Benefits
Many PPO and POS insurance plans offer partial reimbursement for therapy with an out‑of‑network psychologist. Clients often receive 40–80% reimbursement after meeting their out‑of‑network deductible (amount varies by plan).
Here’s how the process typically works:
You pay the session fee at the time of your appointment.
You receive a monthly superbill from me.
You submit the superbill to your insurance company.
Your insurance reimburses you directly, based on your plan’s out‑of‑network benefits.
How to Check Your Out‑of‑Network Benefits
Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:
Do I have out‑of‑network mental health benefits?
What is my out‑of‑network deductible?
After I meet the deductible, what percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?
What is the allowed amount for CPT code 90837 (psychotherapy)?
How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?
How long does reimbursement typically take?
These questions will help you understand your true cost per session.
Depending on your plan, you may also be able to obtain information about your Out-of-Network coverage using the Benefits Calculator” from Thrizer (click here).
Using HSA or FSA Funds
Many clients can use HSA or FSA accounts to pay for therapy sessions. This can significantly reduce your out‑of‑pocket cost.
Is Out‑of‑Network Therapy Worth It?
Clients often choose out‑of‑network therapy when they want:
A therapist with advanced training
Faith‑integrated support that honors both psychology and spiritual formation
More privacy and fewer administrative barriers
A therapeutic relationship that is warm, contemplative, and deeply personalized
If these values resonate with you, out‑of‑network therapy may be an excellent fit.
