Therapy for chronic pain

Psychologist Irene Kraegel leans against a stone wall. Dr. Kraegel provides Pain Reprocessing Therapy to ease chronic pain.

Chronic pain and illness are exhausting, adding layers of challenge to both physical and mental functioning each day. Doing the most basic tasks become a chore, with constant comparisons to “normal” people who appear to be living with ease.

You didn’t expect your life to be interrupted in this way. You feel like you’re fighting for survival, at times fighting your own body and mind. Maybe you’re not even sure sometimes whether you want to survive.

Doctors and therapists haven’t helped, despite all your best efforts, and so you’re searching for something deeper and more effective.

You need healing. You need relief.

My approach to chronic pain and illness is rooted in the highly effective, evidence-based approach of Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Together, we will be scientists, gathering “data” about your neurological responses to difficult bodily sensations in order to accurately chart a pathway to deep and lasting change.

When our brains interpret signals as danger, they respond with pain as an attempt to protect us. You can retrain your brain to be more accurate in assessing danger, teaching it to work with pain more skillfully in order to reduce or even eliminate chronic pain.

Based on the techniques of Pain Reprocessing Therapy, you can find relief from pain.

As one recent client said at the conclusion of treatment, this work is “profound.” It’s your turn now.

What to Expect

Free phone consult

We’ll start with a brief phone call. I want to make sure you feel comfortable talking with me, that you’re clear on how it all works, and that I feel confident I can help. You can ask any questions that help you feel ready for the good work of therapy.

I get it - finding the right therapist is a big deal, and you need to know I’m the right fit before you can feel comfortable jumping in.

Intake session

You’ll fill out some paperwork online, then in our first session (either in-person or online) you’ll fill me in on what you’ve been through, what you’re experiencing now, and what you hope to get out of therapy. In response, I’ll share initial reflections and assesment, along with recommendations.

You’ll leave with some relief at getting started and having a better feel for what to expect.

Ongoing sessions

I’ll hold a weekly therapy time for you, which will be 50 minutes long. Once you’re feeling better, you can choose if you would like to decrease frequency to biweekly or less as you begin integrating your therapy skills into your life on a more independent basis.

You can let me know along the way what’s working for you so I can make adjustments as needed - this time is for you!
